  1. Resume of Mission:  Large portions of western, central, & southern portion of city were destroyed.  Damage was 1.4 sq. mi., or 78% of built-up area.  86 B-29’s bombed visually, and 30 by radar.  9 A/C were non-effective.  11 E/A sighted made no attacks.  Air opposition was nil, but 1 Baka was seen in Target area.  Medium caliber flak & automatic weapons fire was medium to moderate, and accurate, with red tracers to 10,000’ at Primary Target.  Two bursts of possible heavy flak were reported at Primary Target, mostly from airdrome south of Takamatsu.  One barrage balloon identified over dock area of Primary Target at 5000.’  Other possible balloons in Primary Target area at 8,000-10,000 feet.  Of B-29’s lost, 1 ditched immediately after takeoff, and 1 ran off runway.  27 A/C landed at Iwo Jima.  Average Bomb Load:  14,999.  Average Fuel Reserve:  734 gallons.
